  1. When they say “broadcasts”, what do they mean by that? The article says “BBC officials declined to say which other cable networks will provide the service,” which makes it sound like it won’t be broadcast, but rather a cable/sat thing.

  2. Well, in the UK they would say “transmissions,” but in the US we use the word “broadcast” to include cable and satellite. In reality the broadcast spetrum is fairly limited in this day and age and it would be nearly impossible to start up a new broadcast network. You’d have to buy out another network or somehow convince tons of affiliates that you’d be a better partner.

  3. BBC World TV is supposed to be available streaming on the net in the US via Real Networks for $5.95 per month. I say “supposed” because I signed up a few weeks ago but my login is rejected by the server. Its been escalated through three levels of support who have yet to give any idea of when it might work. I’m interested to hear if there is anyone else out there who has tried it.

BBC World and others are also available at http://www.greengrass.tv which is a prepaid streaming TV site. Unfortunately its rather expensive. The 500 kb stream for BBC World works out at $1.50 per hour. I gave them $10 to try it out and it certainly works well. I have my computer hooked to my TV and sitting back it looks pretty much like normal TV.

    Cheers
