That story sounds out of date; wasn’t it just a day or two ago that it was announced that the US was giving ~$350 million in aid?
After pressure and such, the US upped the contribution, but the lost opportunity in terms of goodwill is more the point of the post — “our” initial reaction to the massive tragedy was to give a laughably small sum.
