I’m doing that thing where I ignore my work again.

Frank Gehry’s mirrored cultural edifice in LA blinding motorists, cooking nearby homes – Well yeah, I could have told you that would happen. Just look at the thing!
Actions at Guantanamo “tantamount to torture,” says Red Cross – I’m shocked! Shocked! Except I’m not shocked. I don’t really understand how Bush can continue to get away with such flagrant violations of national and international law with no consequences, no heads rolling, and, well, frankly, re-election. Seems to imply that 51% or so of the American people condone torture. Not exactly the message we want to be sending to the world? Eh, what do we care about the world! Not like we’re a part of it!
16 year old, anger her mother is sending her to fat camp, has her killed – Oh, yeah, and she posted about it on her LiveJournal. (via kottke)
Working when ill increases risk of heart disease – As does stress in general. Which makes you wonder…would giving out (and encouraging the use of) more sick days decrease employer health premiums? Of course, with employee loyalty so low, it would have to be done across the board for it to be effective. And we all know about the tragedy of the commons…
A solution to spam – DDoS? – That is, “distributed denial of service” attacks against spammers’ web sites. I’m amazed a “legitimate” company is pushing this…
The ongoing Kiev protest is highly organized and efficient – It’s a new era of protest. They really have their shit together. And, apparently, they have money. I’m just guessing, but it is probably useful to be a pro-capitalist candidate. 😉
The day I almost led the Iraqi army – This one has been making the rounds and its just so sad. I’ve tried to stop thinking too hard about the Iraq war or blogging about America’s massive failures there, incredible screw-ups that Americans are unaware of and officials refuse to acknowledge. Not sure how much more I’ll have to say on the sad disaster of Iraq in the near future, but I will pass on this, a fairly powerful article. Please read it.
We want a strong dollar because we want a strong dollar – As the greenback falls, the world continues to stare at America incredulously. Kinda makes me want to move into euros…
Turkey. So much turkey. And a “live” parade on three hour tape delay. The hell?
In response to PA turnpike workers strike, commission waives tolls – And lose $2 million in one day. Wow. (Via Kevin)
More on Yushchenko’s disfigurement – dioxin poisoning? – The opposition Ukranian presidential candidate came down with a mysterious illness in September that left him looking completely different. Poisoning sounds more plausible then the other explanation, bad sushi. No, that’s really what they’re saying.
Declaration of Independence banned at California school – More Christian Right propaganda timed just right for family holiday gatherings.
Network infastructure should be a public utility – This response to a story about Verizon’s attacks on pay-for-WiFi service echoes an argument I have been making for years — that the internet infastructure would work best as a shared public resource.
